The Man Who Lost Everything.

Hi Reader

We have got all our work done this week and I'm looking forward to a three-day weekend.

This week I have been writing a post about selling your lawn-mowing business (or part of it)

How to Value and Sell a Lawn Care Business

For over thirty years I used to build and sell at least one lawn mowing round a year. That is a lot of lawns.

One thing that I have noticed is that quite often, the seller has never sold a lawn mowing business before and the buyer has never bought one. This is a bit like the blind leading the blind.

I made a lot of mistakes when I sold my first business and I learned how to get it right as I sold more. Most people only sell their business once.

The other day I was talking to a guy who did pest treatments. He said that he had been there for over a decade and his boss made good money but he really didn't enjoy the work.

He then went on to tell me that he bought a lawn mowing business a few years ago but it didn't work out. Naturally, I was curious so I asked him what happened.

He said that the business was a large franchise and he went out mowing with the guy and loved the work. He was happy with the business so he bought it. He also bought a vehicle, trailer, and all the equipment.

The guy came around on the last day and picked up the vehicle and trailer to get the signwriting done.

He never heard from him again.

He trusted the guy because he had known him for 15 years and all the equipment was with him too, so he lost everything.

When he contacted the franchise, they knew nothing about this sale and were actually looking for the guy themselves. It turned out that he was wanted by the police and had left the country. But not before taking all his gear to the far north and selling it.

They never even found his car.

This is an incredibly bad situation and I really felt for the guy. He had a dream and some scumbag crushed it.

I know that if you have known someone for a long time, you usually trust them, but a bit of due diligence would not have gone astray.

Even a simple phone call to the main franchise in the early days would have picked up something wrong.

If you are selling or buying a business I suggest you do some research first. I have a course with a step-by-step guide here or you can find the same course for a lot less in the membership

This week I listened to Why the Rich Are Getting Richer a book by Robert T. Kiyosaki. I have read about half a dozen of his books and they are well worth the read. If you are going to read this book, read Rich Dad Poor Dad first otherwise the second book will be a bit hard to follow.

Audiobooks are not cheap but you can get it from Everand with a $9.99 all-you-can-eat subscription. If you would like to try a 60-day free trial click here

Anyway, get out there, mow lawns, and have fun

Hi Reader Firstly, my apologies for missing a week. It's the first time in a couple of years, so I guess that's not too bad. These emails take a while to write, and last weekend was hectic. Today, I'm going to look at everyone's favorite subject. How to get more customers? One way that lawn businesses have been using for years is by putting out flyers. The million-dollar question is… But do they really work? Let's find out... When I started a lawn mowing business in 1987, delivering flyers...

Hi It's been another busy week. Working in the rain the last few days hasn't been much fun. Still, it will do the grass good. The lawns are recovering quite well from the dry spell. Someone in the group asked a good question this week. "Hi guys, with the warmer days ending, how's everyone's balance books looking? Has there been a noticeable difference in the state of the economy? Yes, things will slow down soon, and you will soon get customers asking for longer cut cycles. This will leave...

Hi Reader We just picked up our third van last week. We are trying to keep the business small, but with three of us working part-time and closing on 200 lawns, coordinating was starting to get tricky. There were times when all three of us needed to be on the road simultaneously. We have been as high as five vehicles before, but we were employing staff and didn't want to go down that road again. This time around, it's strictly family. Me arriving home with my new van We like to operate out of...
