Three Vans, One Family: Optimizing Our Lawn Care Logistics

Published 2 months ago • 2 min read

Hi Reader

We just picked up our third van last week.

We are trying to keep the business small, but with three of us working part-time and closing on 200 lawns, coordinating was starting to get tricky. There were times when all three of us needed to be on the road simultaneously.

We have been as high as five vehicles before, but we were employing staff and didn't want to go down that road again.

This time around, it's strictly family.

We like to operate out of vans and run each van solo without a trailer. It makes things much easier and improves turnover.

When we ran two-person teams, we found that we could not double what one person could do solo. At best, we would increase turnover by sixty percent. I am unsure why this happens and where that extra time goes, but there you are.

Let's say, for example, that one person going out in a van without a tailor can make $400 a day. (These are just ballpark figures; yours may differ in your area.) Then, one would assume that two people could make $800. We found that the two people would actually make around $600. So, go figure, we eventually had everyone go out solo.

You do have the expense of having another vehicle on the road, but the extra income makes it worthwhile.

We have been working with many lawn-mowing businesses in the membership. The main focus is on reducing costs and increasing turnover. Maximising income without increasing your workload is one of the best things you can do for your business.

This is just a heads-up that we cannot keep the membership at its current price for much longer. There is too much content in the training. Therefore the price will be increasing on the 18th of this month. So, if you are thinking of seriously growing your business, then now is the time to lock in the current price for life.

Update on Google Websites

The Google My Business websites have disappeared. If you click on the link now, you will be redirected back to your Google My Business listing.

This redirection will only last until early June, and they will get an error message when they click the website link. The answer is to remove the website address from your listing or get a website built.

I built a couple of sites this week and created a demo site for my Gecko Lawns business. I hooked this one up to a Google Ads campainge. https://localservices.co.nz/gecko-lawns/

I am extending the $ 99-a-year offer for a build and hosting until early June. This will keep it in line with Google's schedule and allow people to get a site for a fair price before the redirection stops. You can order one here . The current build time is within seven days.

Now get out there, mow lawns, grow your business, and have fun.

Hi Reader Firstly, my apologies for missing a week. It's the first time in a couple of years, so I guess that's not too bad. These emails take a while to write, and last weekend was hectic. Today, I'm going to look at everyone's favorite subject. How to get more customers? One way that lawn businesses have been using for years is by putting out flyers. The million-dollar question is… But do they really work? Let's find out... When I started a lawn mowing business in 1987, delivering flyers...

Hi It's been another busy week. Working in the rain the last few days hasn't been much fun. Still, it will do the grass good. The lawns are recovering quite well from the dry spell. Someone in the group asked a good question this week. "Hi guys, with the warmer days ending, how's everyone's balance books looking? Has there been a noticeable difference in the state of the economy? Yes, things will slow down soon, and you will soon get customers asking for longer cut cycles. This will leave...

Hi Reader Keeping track of your lawns is one of the first things you must master when you start growing your business. How do you do it? Do you use spreadsheets, Google Calendars, or something else? If you are busy like us, updating the day's lawns and planning the next day can take a while. We use a spreadsheet I designed in the early 2000s, but you need to know your way around Excel to make it work. It's not ideal for a lot of lawn-mowing businesses. I have been testing different platforms...
