Thriving Through Seasons: Lawn Mowing Strategies for Year-Round Profit

Published about 2 months ago • 1 min read

Hi

It's been another busy week. Working in the rain the last few days hasn't been much fun. Still, it will do the grass good. The lawns are recovering quite well from the dry spell.

Someone in the group asked a good question this week.

"Hi guys, with the warmer days ending, how's everyone's balance books looking? Has there been a noticeable difference in the state of the economy?

Yes, things will slow down soon, and you will soon get customers asking for longer cut cycles. This will leave spaces in your schedule, and you will need to fill those spots. These days we have a business where 90% of our customers stay fortnightly all year round.

With the gaps left by the three and four-week lawns, you will now have a couple of choices.

  1. Fill that time with other work such as trees, gardens, hedges, or...
  2. Fill those gaps with more lawns.

Where tree work and other jobs could earn you more money in the short term, that may not be the best answer. If you are playing the long game, I suggest you take on new lawn customers instead.

Suppose you are fully booked and have filled those new gaps with a dozen new customers. Then, when spring comes, you will have more work than you can handle. This is excellent news because it means they are just before spring hits. You could price increase a dozen of your lowest-paying lawns.

This will increase your hourly rate and result in you finishing the year with more profit. Do this every year, and you will be the most profitable lawn-mowing business in town. This explanation is a bit simplified. However, I will soon add a module with a walkthrough of the full plan to the membership.

Something to look forward to.

I will answer the second part of this question in another email soon.

Meanwhile, get out there, build your business, mow lawns, and have fun

Hi Reader Firstly, my apologies for missing a week. It's the first time in a couple of years, so I guess that's not too bad. These emails take a while to write, and last weekend was hectic. Today, I'm going to look at everyone's favorite subject. How to get more customers? One way that lawn businesses have been using for years is by putting out flyers. The million-dollar question is… But do they really work? Let's find out... When I started a lawn mowing business in 1987, delivering flyers...

Hi Reader We just picked up our third van last week. We are trying to keep the business small, but with three of us working part-time and closing on 200 lawns, coordinating was starting to get tricky. There were times when all three of us needed to be on the road simultaneously. We have been as high as five vehicles before, but we were employing staff and didn't want to go down that road again. This time around, it's strictly family. Me arriving home with my new van We like to operate out of...

Hi Reader Keeping track of your lawns is one of the first things you must master when you start growing your business. How do you do it? Do you use spreadsheets, Google Calendars, or something else? If you are busy like us, updating the day's lawns and planning the next day can take a while. We use a spreadsheet I designed in the early 2000s, but you need to know your way around Excel to make it work. It's not ideal for a lot of lawn-mowing businesses. I have been testing different platforms...
