Hi Reader

Yes, I got fired by a customer the other day after one cut.

There was nothing wrong with the job because the customer was expecting me to pull an edging machine out of my van, and I used a weedeater.

When talking to the customer on the phone and when I quoted him, he never said anything about a machine edger.

Now you are probably figuring I would have noticed those beautiful straight up and down edges and guess myself.

I am a professional, after all, so I should have noticed that.

Yes, usually, I would notice something like that.

However, it had been over six months since anyone had done the edges, so I had no way of knowing.

After I had done the job and before he rang, I texted my wife and commented that the edges had taken four times longer due to their overgrownness.

He rang me later that day and fired me. Apparently, I wasn't doing what he wanted but failed to ask for.

We can't always recognize customers like this ahead of time, but we can reduce our odds by asking the right questions.

Ninety percent of the time, I spot them ahead of time.

I have outlined my system in a blog post I wrote this week.

Spot a Bad Lawn Care Customer: 11 Red Flags.

I don't worry too much if a customer fires me as long as I feel I did everything right. In fact, we sometimes fire customers, but we are a lot more polite about it when we do that.

You can't please all of the people all of the time.

My book of the week

The book I have been reading while mowing lawns this week is Artificial Intelligence For Dummies. I think this technology will change how the lawn business operates sometime in the future, and I do not want to miss that wave. You can listen to the audiobook for free here.

Anyway, get out there, build your lawn business, and have fun.

Hi Reader Firstly, my apologies for missing a week. It's the first time in a couple of years, so I guess that's not too bad. These emails take a while to write, and last weekend was hectic. Today, I'm going to look at everyone's favorite subject. How to get more customers? One way that lawn businesses have been using for years is by putting out flyers. The million-dollar question is… But do they really work? Let's find out... When I started a lawn mowing business in 1987, delivering flyers...

Hi It's been another busy week. Working in the rain the last few days hasn't been much fun. Still, it will do the grass good. The lawns are recovering quite well from the dry spell. Someone in the group asked a good question this week. "Hi guys, with the warmer days ending, how's everyone's balance books looking? Has there been a noticeable difference in the state of the economy? Yes, things will slow down soon, and you will soon get customers asking for longer cut cycles. This will leave...

Hi Reader We just picked up our third van last week. We are trying to keep the business small, but with three of us working part-time and closing on 200 lawns, coordinating was starting to get tricky. There were times when all three of us needed to be on the road simultaneously. We have been as high as five vehicles before, but we were employing staff and didn't want to go down that road again. This time around, it's strictly family. Me arriving home with my new van We like to operate out of...
